Composed Maccabi back on track

Maccabi Ajax Cricket Club have overcome a slow start to the season to claim a crucial 5 wicket victory over last year’s premiers Malvern.

Playing against the side that knocked them out of the finals last year, the hosts were determined to stop a run of 3 consecutive losses.

Spin again proved to be a successful tactic at the top of the order for Maccabi bowlers, with Mark Soffer (1-18) taking a wicket with the new ball.

Malvern batted their way into the contest from that point, with runs flowing freely.

On his return to the 1st XI, Dov Paltiel (4-18) turned the match on its head, tearing through the visitor’s middle order.

Paltiel was supported by a strong team effort in the field, as Maccabi were able to restrict Malvern to 9-134 from their allotted overs.

Paltiel (64) continued his match winning performance with the bat, striking runs at ease in a 83-run opening stand with Zev Aron (39).

An all too familiar batting collapse threatened to derail victory for Maccabi, as the side lost 5 quick wickets in the middle order.

Josh Jones (16 not out) and 1st XI debutant Wayne Myers (7 not out) held their nerve to guide their side to victory in the 32nd over.

The 2nd XI have proven they are the team to beat this season after defeating 2nd placed Gunbower United by 4 wickets.

Favourable bowling conditions saw Maccabi dismiss the home side for 100. Jeremy Hoppe (3-25), Eli Barr (3-40) and Marley Israel (2-12) all chimed in with multiple wickets, and were well supported by 3 sharp chances taken behind the stumps by young wicketkeeper Brett Jacobs.

Alon Katz (41) continued his good run of form to play a patient innings in helping his side over the line in the 40th over.

The 3rd XI looked in the contest at the innings break after bowling Youlden Parkville out for 149. Barry Kave (4-30) was the pick of the bowlers for Maccabi.

Maccabi never got going in their chase though, as Zak Pollak (14 not out) top scored in his side’s total of 9-99.
