Maccabi dominate in clean sweep

Posted: 26-Feb-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi have bounced back from a disappointing weekend in resounding fashion, with all three sides winning on the same weekend for the first time this season.

Playing in front of a large crowd at the Past Players Day, Maccabi elected to bat first at Gary Smorgon Oval.

Ben Machlin (33) and Mark Soffer (22) made a composed start to the innings, offering few chances to Clayton’s opening bowlers.

Benji Jones (31) joined Machlin at the crease and played the role of the aggressor, as the top order set their side a strong platform at 1-105.

Shmuli Rosenbaum (20) and Charlie Gross (19) batted with freedom to lift the run rate late in the innings, as Maccabi finished on 7-160 from their 45 overs.

A fiery opening spell from Josh Jones (4-25) and Bailey Melzak (1-11) put Maccabi in the box seat early in Clayton’s innings.

Simon Fisher (2-0) and Mark Soffer (2-7) helped wrap up the innings as Clayton Navy were bowled out for 47.

Clayton were sent back into bat as Maccabi sought an outright victory, but the visitors saw out 13 overs to finish at 2-15 before play was called off.

Bailey Melzak (1-0) and Ben Machlin (1-2) broke through before the end of the day.

The win saw the 1st XI move to first on the ladder with one round remaining in the season.

The 2nd XI were finally able to break their winning drought in a memorable 31-run victory over Burnley.

Maccabi looked in trouble after being bowled out for 97. Ari Werdiger (25) added provided a vital cameo late in the innings to help his side to a defendable total.

Werdiger (4-13) continued his standout performance with ball in hand, combining brilliantly with Corey Zielinski (5-15) as Maccabi bowled Burnley out for 66.

The 3rd XI claimed their second win of the season in style, defeating Moonee Valley by 68 runs.

Zac Aflalo (62) notched his maiden half century as Maccabi were dismissed for 149.

Wickets were shared amongst Maccabi’s bowlers, with Ian Jones (3-23) recording the best figures as the home side was bowled out for 81.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Melbourne Cobras on Sunday at Fawkner Park #3 Cordner Oval.
