First XI are off to the finals!

Posted: 08-Feb-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi Ajax have secured a finals berth, after defeating Melbourne Cobras by 8 wickets on Sunday.

Benji Jones (2-18) sent the home side in to bat with immediate success as he shared in 4 wickets with fellow opener Josh Jones (2-13).

Aaron Ostilly (1-6) and Simon Fisher (1-20) ensured runs were hard to come by, as they built pressure on the Cobras’ middle order.

Benji Gore (4-19) played a starring role with the ball late in the innings.

The all-rounder tore through the home side’s lower order to have them bowled out for 76 in the 29th over.

Shmuli Rosenbaum (35 not out) and Mark Soffer (14) made a positive start to the run chase, as the pair added 37 for the opening partnership.

Benji Jones (8) contributed to the total, before Charlie Gross (13 not out) and Rosenbaum comfortably saw their side over the line in the 20th over.

The win moved Maccabi a game clear in 2nd position, ensuring that the side will feature in the finals for the first time since 2014.

The 2nd XI were sent in to bat by Reds at Gary Smorgon Oval, and were dismissed for 96.

Michael Gersun (20), Corey Zielinski (20) and Adam Back (18) all made starts in the middle order but were unable to go on to a big score.

Zielinski (3-30) bowled brilliantly to give his side hope, but the target proved too few in the end, as Reds passed the total with 5 wickets to spare.

The 3rd XI elected to bowl first, as Melbourne Falcons posted 9-179 from their 45 overs.

Barry Kave (3-39) was the only Maccabi bowler to claim multiple wickets.

The total proved too significant for Maccabi, with Eli Barr (25 not out) and Joel Lewis (22) the only notable contributors as the home side was bowled out for 88.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Doveton North on Sunday at Power Reserve.
