Maccabi let top slip

Posted: 08-Feb-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi Ajax have fallen from the top position on the ladder after narrowly going down to premiership contenders Carnegie.

The 1st XI made their return to Caulfield, electing to bat first at Princes Park.

Carnegie claimed the upper hand in the early stages, reducing Maccabi to 2-26.

BenjI Jones (47) led from the front in rebuilding the innings, striking six boundaries in his knock.

A tight bowling performance from the hosts had slowed Maccabi’s scoring rate, before Benji Gore (34) and Josh Jones (30) came together.

The pair lifted the scoring rate in their 65-run stand, pushing Maccabi’s closing total along to 168.

Carnegie’s opening batsmen adopted an aggressive approach to the Maccabi bowlers, taking 70 runs off the first 10 overs before Josh Jones (1-57) was able to break through.

Spinners Simon Fisher (4-23) and Mark Soffer (2-17) turned the match on it’s head, as Carnegie collapsed to 7-107.

Maccabi were unable to dismiss a determined Carnegie lower order, as the home side struck the winnings runs in the penultimate over with two wickets to spare.

The 2nd XI again fell just short of victory, losing to Youlden Parkville by 11 runs.

Jack Lehrer (2-25) was the pick of the bowlers as Maccabi held the hosts to 5-168 from their 45 overs.

Ben Machlin (59) and Steven Lustig (37) looked to have put their side in the box seat for victory at 1-114, but a middle order collapse ensured Maccabi were bowled out for 157.

The 3rd XI claimed a well deserved 117-run victory over Emmanuel South Oakleigh.

Important contributions from Meir New (50), Michael Gersun (36) and Sam Brygel (31) helped Maccabi post a competitive 9-179 from their allotted overs.

Ian Jones (3-15) was the star with the ball as Maccabi bowled the visitors out for 62 in a memorable win.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Melbourne Cobras on Sunday at Fawkner Park 3 Cordner Oval.
