Maccabi move into first with clutch win

Posted: 25-Jan-2018 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi Ajax have claimed top spot on the ladder following a thrilling last over victory on Sunday.

Maccabi lost the toss and were sent into the field in a reduced overs match due to heat. Quick bowlers Ari Werdiger (2-4) and Josh Jones (1-19) both struck early to have Monash Tigers 3-11. The hosts found their feet in the contest and looked in control following a 55-run stand for the 4th wicket.

Spinners Mark Soffer (3-35) and Simon Fisher (3-36) worked in tandem, as they tore through the Tigers’ middle order. Levi Rosenbaum put in a tidy performance behind the stumps, claiming two catches along with two stumpings.

The Tigers were dismissed for 123 in the final of their 30 overs.

Benji Jones (32) and Shmuli Rosenbaum (20) recovered from a shaky start to the chase to put their side on track. Despite their dismissals, Mendi Rosenbaum (24) and Josh Jones (22) continued to bat with intent. The result looked in some doubt as Maccabi collapsed from 3-104 to 7-112.

The experience of Michael Gersun (9 not out) and JJ Zimmet (3 not out) proved vital in the closing stages, as the pair saw their side over the line with three wickets to spare.

First XI Scorecard -

The 2nd XI were unable to break their winning drought, losing by 17 runs against Melbourne Falcons.

Maccabi bowled the visitors out for 139 in the last of their 35 overs. The wickets were evenly shared, with Aaron Ostilly (3-28), Jack Lehrer (2-21) and Simon Morawetz (2-33) the multiple wicket takers.

Charlie Gross (32) had put his side in a strong position at the drinks break of the chase. The required run rate continued to rise though, proving too difficult to manage for the middle order. A flurry of late runs from Lehrer (27 not out) wasn’t enough for Maccabi, as they finished their allotted overs on 9-122.

Second XI scorecard -

The 3rd XI were narrowly denied victory against Parkville District.

Nadav Moskow (3-4) was the pick of the bowlers as Maccabi dismissed Parkville for 68.

Maccabi were unsuccessful in their chase in difficult batting conditions, as they were bowled out for 56.

Third XI Scorecard -

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on 2nd Place Carnegie on Sunday – Location to TBC.
