Maccabi Ajax finish 2017 in style

Posted: 19-Dec-2017 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi will head into 2018 in a strong position, following a stirring 7-run victory over Clayton Blues.

Maccabi’s openers were unable to take advantage of the favourable batting conditions, as the side fell to 2-10 early in the innings.

Young pair Charlie Gross (68) and Benji Gore (34) steadied the ship in a 42-run partnership.

Despite Gore being dismissed, Gross continued to patiently build his innings on the way to his maiden half century for the side.

Michael Gersun (33) made a significant impact in the middle order, with his aggressive knock including a remarkable 4 sixes.

1st XI debutant Corey Zielinski (30 not out) made a vital late contribution as Maccabi were dismissed for 192 in the 44th over.

Although Josh Jones (1-36) claimed an early wicket, Clayton made a strong start to their innings.

Corey Zielinski (2-24) was able to change the momentum of the match with two wickets in quick succession.

Clayton recovered and looked in control of the match at 4-120 before some individual brilliance by Jake Jones (3-26) brought his side back into the contest.

The all-rounder claimed 3 crucial wickets, to go with a stunning run out off his own bowling.

Charlie Gross (1-10) continued his man-of-the-match performance to pick up a late wicket.

The final wicket proved difficult to come by in a tense finish, before a Benji Gore run out sealed a memorable win.

Stand in 1st XI skipper Mark Soffer described the win as “an amazing effort by the boys. Wins like that are why we play the game”.

The win sees the side head into the mid-season break in second position on the ladder, in head coach Lal Jayasinghe’s first year at the helm.

An influx of young players has been central to the team’s success, with trio Benji Gore (averaging 30), Charlie Gross (averaging 48) and Jake Jones (averaging 36.33 and 7 wickets) all proving to be match winners.

Pace bowlers Corey Zielinski (2-17) and Bailey Melzak (2-21) bowled out their allotted overs and gave their side a chance at victory.

The target proved too low in the end, as the home side passed the required score in the 37th over.

An improved effort by the 3rd XI wasn’t enough to claim victory against Carnegie, as the side lost by 69 runs.

Spinning duo Ian Jones (3-24) and Sam Rosen (3-24) did most of the damage as Carnegie were bowled out for 153.

Eli Adelist (33) and Zak Pollak (18) looked to give their side hope, but the struggles of the side’s middle order continued, as Maccabi were bowled out for 84.
