Young star unable to lift Maccabi over the line

Posted: 24-Nov-2017 by Cricket Senior

A remarkable innings by rising star Amir Meyerowitz wasn’t enough for Maccabi AJAX’s 3rd XI to claim victory over the weekend, as the side went down to Moonee Valley by 16 runs on Sunday.

Moonee Valley elected to bat first at home, but lost early wickets through the bowling of Dean Wainstein (1-16) and returning quick Gilad Meyerowitz (1-11)

Eli Paneth (3-18) did the damage in the middle order as Moonee Valley slumped to 6-42.

Despite a resistance from the lower order, experienced spinners Ian Jones (4-16) and Barry Kave (1-17) were able to clean up the remaining wickets as Moonee Valley were bowled out for 107.

Maccabi made a disastrous start to their innings, being reduced to 7-22.

In just his 5th game of senior cricket, Amir Meyerowitz (58) attempted to single-handedly win his side the match.

Meyrowitz’s showed maturity beyond his years, smashing 8 boundaries in his half century.

He shared in a 47-run stand with a patient Brent Callis (9) for the 8th wicket.

The performance wasn’t enough for Maccabi in the end, as the side was bowled out for 91.

The 1st XI had to settle for a share of the points in their match against Clayton Blues, as inclement weather meant that the match was unable to commence.

The 2nd XI looked on their way to a breakthrough victory before rain intervened on Saturday.

After being sent in to bat, Maccabi’s top order were unable to get going as the side fell to 4-43.

A brilliant 81-run partnership by Doovie Cohen (53) and Simon Morawetz (48 not out) provided their side with a solid platform.

Contributions from young duo Aaron Ostilly (12) and Marley Israel (10) helped lift the side to 7-156 from their 45 overs.

Power House were unable to begin their innings due to the weather, which saw the sides split the points.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Malvern on Sunday at Gary Smorgon Oval.
