Maccabi Ajax CC back on the winner's list

Posted: 01-Nov-2017 by Cricket Senior

Maccabi AJAX have continued their promising start to the season, cruising to an 8-wicket victory over Clayton Navy on Sunday.

The visitors elected to bat at Gary Smorgon Oval, but were soon regretting their decision as opening bowler Ari Werdiger (1-8) picked up an early wicket. 1st XI captain Benji Jones (3-18) shared the new ball duties and was rewarded for his consistency, taking a wicket in his first spell.

Jacob Jones (1-3) and JJ Zimmet (1-13) were introduced into the attack and ensured that runs were hard to come by, both forcing an opposition error. Simon Fisher (3-20) tore through the middle order, while returning all-rounder David Fayman (1-14) chimed in with a wicket.

Jones brought himself back on to wrap up the innings, as Clayton Navy were bowled out for 82 in the 36th over.

Shumli Rosenbaum (12) and Mendi Rosenbaum (26) made a composed start to the chase, with their 44-run opening stand putting the side within reach of victory. Joel Hamilton (23 not out) and Benji Jones (9 not out) put the result beyond doubt, passing the target in the 24th over.

The 2nd XI’s struggles with the bat again proved their downfall, going down to Burnley by 108 runs.

Bowling first, Maccabi restricted Burnley to 8-173, on the back of an impressive spell of bowling by Ian Ludski (4-20).

Maccabi never got going in their batting innings, being bowled out for 65. Rising star Aaron Ostilly (34) was the one shining light.

The 3rd XI put in a competitive performance but fell short to Canterbury by 7 wickets.

Batting first, Maccabi looked in significant trouble at 8-64.

Eli Barr (32 not out) and Alan Stein (8 not out) dug in to give their side a chance at victory, sharing in a determined 67-run partnership for the 9th wicket (a new Maccabi Ajax CC 3rd XI 9th wicket partnership record), lifting their side to 8-131.

Zak Pollak (2-14) impressed with the ball but it wasn’t to be for Maccabi, as Canterbury passed the total in the 32nd over.

This weekend, the 1st XI takes on Malvern on Sunday at Malvern Cricket Ground from 12:30pm.
