Posted: 17-Oct-2017 by Cricket Senior

The future is looking bright for the Maccabi AJAX Cricket Club, following a promising first weekend of cricket for the season.

The 1st XI claimed a comprehensive 32-run victory, while there were encouraging signs in the lower grades.

After all sides missed the opening round of the season due to poor weather, the 1st XI were sent in to bat by Monash Tigers at Central Reserve on Sunday. Opener Zev Aron (37) and Benji Jones (22) took advantage of the favourable batting conditions as the visitors raced to 1-57 after 14 overs. Jones’ dismissal triggered a middle order collapse, as Maccabi lost 5-39 and looked in trouble at 6-96 after 29 overs.

1st XI debutant Benji Gore (71 not out) came together with Jacob Jones (35 not out), as the pair put on a remarkable 104-run partnership for the 7th wicket, lifting the total to 6-200 at the end of the allotted overs.

Regular wickets late in the innings saw the Tigers slow to 6-168 at the end of their 45 overs, giving the 1st XI their first win in an opening match since 2014. 1st XI Scorecard

Team Captain Benji Jones described the efforts of Gore and Jacob Jones as crucial to the win. “They both batted beautifully, running well between the wickets and hitting boundaries when needed”.
