Klein fireworks secures the win

Posted: 06-Jul-2017 by Cricket Senior

At 9/150 chasing 188 Australia thought all hope was gone.

Losing five wickets for 12 runs in a tight chase will do that.

The game seemed lost. South Africa would take the points in the opener.

No-one, however, told Adam Klein.

Needing 38 runs with only one wicket up the Aussie sleeve the tail-ender smashed 36 including four sixes to secure a thrilling one wicket win for the Aussies.

That, together with his two wickets opening the Australian bowling, makes him the undoubted Australian hero from the first full day of competition at the Maccabiah Games.

"To do that at an event like Maccabiah to do it for Australia is quite a surreal feeling and quite amazing. It still hasn't sunk in that we've knocked off the reigning champions and the favorites. There's an incredible buzz in the team right now and we really feel as though we've got something special going," he said.

In his cricket team though there are plenty others that also deserve plaudits.

Simon Fisher for not only his two wickets with the ball but for keeping his wicket with the bat in those stomach-turning final stages and notching up as valuable a three not out as an Aussie Maccabiah cricket team has ever seen.

Reece Israel was another to star - the all-rounder batting at number five played the crucial holding innings for Australia of 47 and together with all of his bowling partners bar none maintained a tight line and accurate length with the ball to take 1/22 off 9 overs.

Zev Aron with 27 and Benji Jones 20 made valuable contributions as did the captain David Fayman who sent a couple of stumps flying into the Dead Sea to take 2/54.

With the points over the South Africans in the bank the Aussies chances of a medal at these Games have improved enormously.

Clashes with Great Britain, India and Israel are still to come in the group but for a team that has underachieved in recent Maccabiah's this result has put them on a path to change that this time around.
