Saturday XI storm into top spot

For the second consecutive season, Maccabi AJAX has a team firming as Premiership favourites.

Over the weekend the Saturday XI moved into top spot on the C Saturday ladder after two clinical T20 victories over Barnawartha North at Edmund Herring Oval.

The Jackas posted a highly-competitive total of 140 in the opening fixture of the day’s double-header.

Former First XI skipper Mark Soffer top-scored with 26 while openers Joel Hamilton (19) and Justin Tyler (17) got off to an attacking start.

Soffer back up his efforts with the bat to help bowl the Saturday XI to victory, claiming 3/12 as the home side were bundled out for 82.

Barnawartha didn’t fare too much better in the second game, rolled for 71 after being sent into bat.

The Jackas’ bowling effort was highlighted by a remarkable hat-trick by 16-year old Corey Zielinski who finished with impressive figures of 4/7 from four overs.

Reece Israel was also damaging, picking up figures of 3/11 to take his season tally to 20 wickets.

The new flag favourites needed just 11.3 overs to chase down the miserly target and they did so for the loss of one wicket.

Hamilton found the fence on 11 occasions during his unbeaten knock of 55. The opener has enjoyed a consistent comeback season, accumulating 314 runs at an average of 31.4.

The Saturday XI have two regular season fixtures remaining before they begin their finals assault.

The re-introduction of a Saturday team this season has brought a number of talented past players back to the Club in a Maccabiah year, as well as provide a direct link for promising junior players to get a taste of senior cricket.

Meanwhile, wet weather denied the First XI from securing a second successive victory.

Their clash with Burnley was called off after 32 overs on the deciding day with the Jackas requiring a further 60 runs to win with six wickets in hand.

Steven Lustig (25*) and Raf Epstein (14*) were the not out batsman when the game was called a draw.

It was a day to forget for the Second and Third XI’s who suffered significant losses.
