Winless weekend for Macca Jackas

A depleted Maccabi AJAX First XI suffered a humiliating outright loss in a one-day fixture to ladder-leaders South Yarra at Como Park on Saturday.

Batting first the visitors managed 82 on a tricky pitch. The conditions didn’t seem to affect the Yarras who blasted their way to 6/207.

With first innings points in the bag the hosts chased an unlikely outright victory.

An inexperienced and weakened Jackas side had no answer and were bowled out for 99, handing the Yarras vital bonus points.

The First XI head into the New Year languishing on the bottom of the Mercantile A-Grade table and after five rounds are still yet to taste victory this season.

On Sunday the Second XI suffered a stunning collapse that saw them slump to a 35-run loss against the visiting Melbourne Cobras.

Skipper Benji Jones won the toss and elected to bowl first due to the visibly favourable conditions.

Dov Paltiel (2/30) and Jones (1/31) did well to restrict the Cobras early who were on the attack.

Josh Jones produced a class spell of fast bowling, claiming 3/35 from nine overs. The 21-year old bowled with extreme pace and control, singlehandedly shifting the game’s momentum back AJAX’s way.

Youngsters Eli Ledeberger (2/8) and Corey Zielinski (1/21) impressed later in the innings as the Cobras were eventually bowled out for 167.

“It was our best fielding performance of the season, however the ninth-wicket partnership lasted 11 overs which is costly in a one-day game,” Captain Benji Jones told the AJN.

AJAX began the chase in disastrous style with opener Zev Aron runout for five.

Aaron Fetter and Jones came together and shared in a valuable 54-run partnership.

The pair moved the score along to 60 at drinks, however Fetter lost concentration and his wicket shortly after the break for 35.

Jones was once again forced to shoulder the responsibility and he did so bravely before being dismissed for 53 - his second consecutive half century.

AJAX’s long-standing batting woes under pressure came to the fore again as the Cobras affected a staggering collapse of 6/2, paving the way for a comfortable 35-run win.

The Third XI also struggled with the bat, falling 13 runs short against Parkville District at Brens Oval.

Jono Baruch (2/4), debutant Schneir Lange (2/8) and Ian Jones (2/12) all contributed strongly with the ball as the Jackas dismissed the hosts for 112.

At 7/94 the Thirds sensed victory, however they couldn’t hold their nerve in the dying stages.

They were bowled out for 99, 13 shy of the required target.

This weekend the Saturday XI host Monash University at Gary Smorgon Oval, while on Sunday the Second XI are home against Malvern and the Thirds travel to play Canterbury.
