Seconds start season with perfect ten

Maccabi AJAX’s Second XI began their Premiership defence in strong fashion, beating Clayton District by ten wickets at Meade Reserve on Sunday.

With the club’s other three teams not taking to the field due to the poor conditions of the majority of grounds leading up to the season-opener, the promoted seconds kicked off their season in A Sunday.

Benji Jones took control of the Twos and sent the home side into bat in blustery conditions.

Jones struggled opening the bowling into the wind as Clayton raced away to a strong early start of 0/42.

His opening partner Adam Klein finally broke through taking two wickets in quick succession to level the game’s momentum.

The introduction of Dov Paltiel into the attack saw Clayton lose 3/5. Paltiel with the help of brother Nochum (two catches) had the hosts in desperate trouble at 6/63.

Dov chatted with J-Air Radio’s ‘On the Ball’ about his day out on Sunday. Listen here.

After a mini-fightback Paltiel claimed his fourth and fifth wicket with Clayton staring at a total below 100.

Some late-order hitting lifted their score to 121. Paltiel ended up with figures of 6/38 from nine overs, his second six-wicket haul in the past two seasons.

Klein was the only other multiple wicket-taker with 2/19 off seven.

Jones and Nochum Paltiel began the MaccaJackas’ chase cautiously, seeing off Clayton’s opening pair.

From then they reached 50 and then 100 in quick time.

They both played chanceless innings, knocking off the required runs in just 18 overs.

Jones found the boundary 13 times in his knock of 65*, while Paltiel wasn’t to be outdone by his brother, hitting 57*.
